The Haga Initiative member companies have decided to become fossil free within their own operations by 2030. The new targets imply that the members of the initiative will reach zero emissions 15 years before the time frame of the Swedish government’s climate goals. The ambition is to show that Swedish companies can reduce their climate impact while increasing profitability and creating job opportunities, thus contributing to improved welfare.
Definition of the new targets
Scope 1: The target is net zero emissions by 2030. The target means at least 85 percent reduction in emissions from the company’s own operations, or scope 1 emissions, compared to a base year that can be any year after 1990. To reach net zero emissions, the remaining emissions can be reduced through carbon offsets. The aim is a fossil fuel free company. Exception: If the company can show significant measurable emission reductions in other scopes.
Scope 2: Purchased energy in scope 2 should be renewable or recycled.
Scope 3: Emissions in scope 3 (upstream and downstream) are to be identified. The companies need to develop a strategy to reduce the emissions based on relevance and feasibility.
The Haga Initiative’s goal of zero net emissions by 2030 requires both a more ambitious climate policy from the Swedish government aligned with the European Union´s climate policy, and a more rigid framework for the emission trading system (EU-ETS). Sweden can be leading in the global transition to a fossil-free society only if the basic industry remains within the country. Therefore, measures to reduce emissions from the domestic industry are required. Sweden can show the rest of the world that the transition is possible through energy efficiency, conversion to renewable energy sources and green technology development. To succeed, we need progressive legislation, state-funded research and investments that are aligned with the climate goals. Furthermore, cooperation between academia, government and industry is vital. We do realize that we do not have all the answers as of today, but at the same time we do hope to see political ambitions and clear targets that increase the pace of the climate transition.
